60 years of history of the Mont Blanc Tunnel motorway network 

The ATMB company, Mont Blanc Autoroutes and Tunnel has existed under the current name only since 1996 but its history started in 1957. Read about the key dates in the history of ATMB.

1957

The STMB Mont Blanc Tunnel company was created.

1965

Charles de Gaulle and Giuseppe Saragat inaugurate the Mont Blanc Tunnel.

1968

The Government decides to build the Autoroute Blanche (A40) and confers the project to STMB

1973

The first section of the Autoroute Blanche is opened.

1996

STMB becomes ATMB (Mont Blanc Autoroutes and Tunnel).

1999

On the 24th of March the fire in the Mont Blanc Tunnel claims 39 victims. A monument is erected to their memory on the access road to the Tunnel.

2000

ATMB and SITMB (Italian Mont Blanc Tunnel company) create the GEIE-TMB (European Mont Blanc Economic Interest Group) responsible for the management of the installation as a single unit.

2002

ATMB and SITMB invest 400 million euros to create a new tunnel which becomes a world reference in terms of security The construction is progressively opened to traffic.

2004

The new Eloise Autoroute Blanche(A40) centre is inaugurated.

2010

The government confers the management and maintenance of the Route Blanche (RN205) to ATMB.

2013

The Fayet intervention centre is reinstated to maintain the Route Blanche (RN205).

2014

The first High Quality Environmental ® motorway management centre is inaugurated in Bonneville.

2015

The customer Service Centre opens its doors in Nangy to deal with the high demand in electronic tolls.
